Ephesians 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height. (KJV)
Do you understand God’s love?
What is your response to the question? Most believers would say, “Of course I understand God’s love”. Can you explain it to someone who does not understand love at all? In the movie, Meet Joe Black, William Parish tries to explain what love is:
William Parrish: Trust, responsibility, taking the weight for your choices and feelings, and spending the rest of your life living up to them. And above all, not hurting the object of your love.
Joe Black: So that’s what love is, according to William Parrish?
William Parrish: Multiply it by infinity, and take it to the depth of forever, and you will still have barely a glimpse of what I’m talking about.
That is a pretty good definition. However, there is still much more. If you tried to give an explanation, how would you do it? Would you give them a scripture?
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
How would you make the definition personal? Would you begin with your experiences with the love of God? Would you share how He demonstrated His love in your life? Would you talk about some pivotal encounters with Him that deepened your understanding of His love? Would you testify to how much more you show your love for Him and to others because of those encounters? Would you say they would understand better if they read the Bible and talked to other believers? While explaining God’s love, it is important to make sure you let them know that is not like the love human beings give. It does not come and go depending on feeling and trials and tribulations of life.
Trying to explain the love of God can be a daunting task because His love is so overwhelming. A person could read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. By some miracle, they could speak to every Christian, past, present, and future, to hear their experiences with Him. Even then, even then, they would only get a fragment of the knowledge needed to explain and understand the vastness of God’s love. Paul tried to provide a deeper understanding.
Romans 8:38-39 So now I live with the confidence that there is nothing in the universe with the power to separate us from God’s love. I’m convinced that his love will triumph over death, life’s troubles, fallen angels, or dark rulers in the heavens. There is nothing in our present or future circumstances that can weaken his love. 39 There is no power above us or beneath us—no power that could ever be found in the universe that can distance us from God’s passionate love, which is lavished upon us through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One! (TPT)
Before you end the explanation, here is a quote you can use:
God’s love goes beyond what you were and what you have done; who you are and what you are doing; and who you will be and what you might do. It covers you completely and presents you, without a single flaw, before the Father. Dr. Pamela Russell
Please agree with me as I pray. Then ask the Lord what your prayer should be and wait for His response:
Father, I can talk about Your love. I can write about Your love, preach about it, and teach on it. When it really gets down to it, I only have a glimpse. What I know is only the tip of the iceberg. Even in this lesson, I repent if I left the reader thinking I had “the” answer. I only have the best answer I can give up to this point. The magnitude of Your love for me, and the entire universe, goes beyond my ability to comprehend or express, yet I try. However, I don’t leave it as the last try. I search for a deeper understanding of Your love, every day. In my quest, I fall more in love with You. When I think about what You do because You love me and what You do because You love the world, there is nothing to compare it to. There is no frame of reference. There is nothing I have or ever will experience that would help me make sense of it. To say that I am in awe of Your love; I am overwhelmed by Your love; and I am consumed by Your love are just words that my intellect can understand, though my heart struggles to. It is full to the bursting point. I do my best to accept Your love, embrace Your love, and show You my gratitude for Your love…
